A Time of Growth and KiKi's Summer Schedule

I half abandoned all my blogs over the past few months.Well more accurately I completely abandoned my blogs ;). I felt bad but in lieu of some of the stress and live events I have been experiencing I simply didn't have the time and energy to put into writing.

In the past year I experienced car stress,work stress, car stress again, health stress ,car stress some more, and home stress. And while none of it was fun, it was manageable and led to a path of personal growth. I spent a lot of time this year working on myself and growing. And while all this growth is important and necessary- it takes up some time and I had to divert some of my energy away from other activities.

But that is sometimes how life goes. There are times where you need to focus your energy on specific things and that means you may need to take a break from others things so you can sort through your current situations.

Luckily yoga was not one of the things I pushed to the side. I have really dived in to developing my own personal practice as part of my growth and it has been really rewarding.

But now that life appears to be easing a little bit for me and maybe I will plateau from my growth for a while. I am happily reconnecting with people and activities that I had to step away from.

Yin and Yang Yoga

So you have probably heard of the concepts of Yin and Yang before. Two opposing forces that create balance together. But how do they relate to Yoga?

Yin Yoga is a slow-paced style of yoga where poses, or asanas are held for longer periods of time-typically 3-5 minutes but some asana can be held longer. Yin practice can be deep and introspective and can provide a sense of stress relief and peace. Gentle stretches are held while the muscles are cold, allowing the joints to ease into postures. Yin can be said to be focused on healing and recovery.
Yin can be beneficial if you are living a crazy busy life with lots of activity and movement. Taking the time to be still, be with yourself and be patient and present can be valuable and can bring balance to your hectic life.

Yang Yoga is the more traditional Hatha or Ashtanga bases asana practice that focuses on strength, stamina and heat. In yang yoga the asanas are held for shorter amount of time 3-5 breathes or longer and are often incorporated into sequences of movements designed to get and keep the body and muscles warm.
Yang can be beneficial if you have been sitting all day in an office job or have been inactive for a time. Yang is great when you need to bring heat, movement and active energy into your life.

Many people will find that they are drawn to Yin or Yang over the other and having a preference is normal but it is important to remember balance. Often when we are running fast paced lives we may want the quick movements and heat of Yang but our minds may be craving the peace of Yin.

The truth is that we need the energies of both Yin and Yang in our life. We need excitement, exercise and high energy but we also need peace, rest and mental quietness. We need to work out muscles but also allow them to heal. It is up to us to determine what will bring balance into our lives. That may differ from one day to another.

I have found that Yin can be very challenging for me as my life can sometimes be dominated by Yang energy so being still is difficult. The benefits I have received from Yin are amazing though. I encourage all of you to reflect on how you can bring more balance into your own lives.

All About Acro Yoga

First off, what is Acro Yoga?
Acro Yoga is a mixture of yoga postures and poses with partnered acrobatics. It can also take on therapeutic massage depending on the style. It's also a ridiculous good time.
While most Acro Yoga poses show only 2 individuals, there are 3 roles in Acro Yoga. The base, the flyer and the spotter.

The Base:
The base refers to the person who is supporting the flyer. The base is often laying on the ground and is lifting and supporting the flier using their legs and hands.
The Flyer:
The Flyer is the awesome and lucky individual who gets to be lifted into the air and supported while moving into fun and challenging positions.
The Spotter:
The spotter is not typically involved in the Acro poses but is there to support the flyer and base in learning and moving through Acro transitions and new moves. The spotters role is to ensure safety and avoid injuries for all parties. The spotter is often not seen in photos or videos but is a key role in the learning journey.

I was first introduced to Acro Yoga by way of pole doubles workshops at Pole Expo in 2013 and to the fundamentals of Acro Yoga later by a lovely new friend. You can read about my first adventure in Acro Yoga HERE.
Naturally I have tried to get many of my friends and loved one involved in it over the years with mixed success. A few of my partners have had the strength to base but not the hamstring flexibility and my friends who had the flexibility did not have the strength or the interest. So I started basing a lot to show others the fun in flying. A few have entertained me over the years from time to time but only my youngest sister has really taken much of an interest in it. My sister is also one of the lighter and tinier people I know so basing for her is easier then basing for my taller or heavier friends and loved ones. (but I have not let that stop me from basing for my 6 foot tall or 200+ lbs loved ones either)

Anyways flash forward to the present and I am now taking Yoga Teacher Training by that same wonderful friend who introduced me to the fundamentals and I am happy to say that Acro is one of the many yoga styles we are touching on. And now that my sister is living with me, I have a captive person to make play Acro with me and a better understanding of the yoga foundations in which to try all the new moves with!
Now when things interest me I like to learn more about them, and when I can't figure stuff out, that means it's time to research. All of my learning and research has started me with a growing collection of internet resources that I would love to share with anyone else out there who is interested in dabbling in or learning Acro Yoga.

Please note that as with any physical sport or activity, there are always risks involved. These risks can be avoided by learning formally in classes,  always having spotters, ongoing communication between all parties involved, and even using crash mats. And, as always, listen to your body. If something doesn't feel good, don't do it. And please make sure to stretch out your own and your partner's bodies. These moves can be hard on both the flyer and the base. And make sure to high five and give you spotter some love too!

This series is one of my absolute favourites for Acro instruction. i love how they take the time to break down the move from the perspective of each individual involved.
